Foundations: chemistry for seeing disease
I trained as a chemist at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona: an MSc with the highest distinction, then a PhD in medicinal and bioinorganic chemistry, graded Excel·lent cum laude, while teaching full-time as a Professora Ajudant in the Department of Chemistry. My doctoral work asked a question that has followed me ever since: can we design small molecules that bind the metal ions and amyloid aggregates behind Alzheimer's disease and be seen inside a living body? Answering it meant synthesis, metal-protein titrations, spectroscopy and computational screening, and, through research stays at ICMAB-CSIC and IQS, my first hands-on radiochemistry: labelling molecules with iodine-123 for in vivo imaging.
